CEO Corner April 2018

The Paradox of Rural Health Care Naches, Ellensburg and Tieton all, over the years, reached out to Community Health of Central Washington for help.  They needed better access to care, and they could not solve the problem alone. There was a time not that long ago that those communities would have made the pitch to doctors who could go there, hang out a shingle, and go into practice.  Those days are gone.  Medicine has become far too complex for that to be a reasonable expectation.  Some of the complexity is transparent.  Everybody can see what...

CEO Corner February 2018

In Praise of Careers of Service Dr. Jeffery Bartlett joined the (then) young practice at Yakima Pediatrics in 1985. He was fresh out of residency at Children’s Hospital in Seattle. He has served the needs of Yakima’s kids continuously ever since. He was a recognized leader within his group and continued to lead after Yakima Pediatrics joined CHCW in 2006. As the Clinical Site Director, Dr. Bartlett has had a hand in helping to grow, shape and improve services for kids at YP and throughout CHCW and Yakima for the past 12 years. We want to...

CEO Corner January 2018

2018: It’s Cold Outside …and I’m not just talking about the weather. CHCW workers performed admirably in 2017.  Your efforts advanced our service and education missions in important ways.  All the while, the collaboration between staff and Leaders to improve CHCW as a place to work and to receive care progressed, thanks to the incredible efforts of all to optimize our Ignite program.  Within CHCW, the forecast looks warm and bright. Unfortunately, the environment that we live in is looking colder and darker.  We are here to serve the poor and...

CEO Corner December 2017

Your Feedback Gets Results In recent months almost all of our employees have contributed to the answer to this important question:  What would make CHCW a better place to work?  You completed surveys, sent suggestions, and attended focus group meetings.  I want to be sure that you know that you were heard and that we are responding, and will be providing updates on your suggestions throughout the year.     A lack of clear expectations and feedback were among the things heard most loudly from you. For example: ·  “My job expectations aren’t...

CEO Corner November 2017

I can be hard to satisfy.  It wasn’t enough that 257 employees (84% of you!) took the time to complete the Employee Engagement Survey this summer.  It wasn’t enough that you filled 63 pages with narrative comments with your responses.  Next, I asked your Leaders to meet with you and review those responses to get to a clear understanding, and to hear suggested solutions. I now have 25 reports from focus groups that Leaders asked staff to participate in. If you joined one of those meetings, Thank You!  I’m finally satisfied.  Not only did you...

CEO Corner October 2017

25 years!  It sounds like a long time….but it felt like a short time.  How can that be?  I guess when you have a steady purpose, and you pursue it one day at a time, it adds up.  It’s just a whole bunch of days.  You don’t think much about it.   That’s why our 25th Anniversary is so important.  It causes us to stop and think about it, to reflect on it, and to appreciate all that has happened over those many days.  A lot of our workers weren’t even born when we started the journey.  Of course, we have grown and changed a lot over those years. ...

It’s All Relative – March 2017

There’s lots of talk in town and around the country about the shortage of primary care providers.  Check out the March 10 editorial in the Herald-Republic if you didn’t see it (http://www.yakimaherald.com/opinion/editorials/it-takes-community-to-attract-physicians/article_0fe8cfd2-051d-11e7-b3e8-df1a2ffc2c79.html ) Even people who love Yakima sometimes seem to love to hate it.  Yes…we do have our obstacles to overcome.  But compared to most small cities like us, with large rural service areas and agricultural economies, we have some...

You Light My Fire – February 2017

Posted by on February 13, 2017 in Ceo Message | Comments Off on You Light My Fire – February 2017

You Light My Fire Thanks for a great kick-off for Ignite! 90% of you (252 employees) attended one of the Employee Forums on February 1 & 2.  If you’re among the other 29, you can expect an email soon instructing you on how to get credit for attendance by viewing a video of the presentation. 59 of the attendees took the time and effort to write a comment or question.  We will be working to respond to those starting very soon. What I can tell you from having read them all is that there is a great deal of anticipation for the change that...

ACA Impacts – January 2017

ACA Impacts Senator Patty Murray and her staff are working hard to preserve the gains that the ACA (Obamacare) has brought to our patients. Recently, she reached out to ask us to share some stories about those patients. Statistics are great…and there are a lot of them.  Yakima County has benefited disproportionately from the ACA. We lead the state in terms of the proportion of people who gained coverage through the Exchange (Washington Health Plan Finder) at 47% (100,974 enrollees).  We also lead the state in the proportion who gained...

Studer Group: Not New – Better

Studer Group: Not New – Better

In the coming months you will see the impact of our engagement with the Studer Group.  At first it might feel like a lot of new stuff.  For the most part, it’s not.  We didn’t select the Studer Group because we wanted a bunch of new and shiny projects.  There are enough of those in health care already.  We have identified goals that we want and need to achieve, but where progress has been slow, or results aren’t what we hoped for, or we’re just plain stuck.  We chose the Studer Group because they showed us the tools that can help us to move...
