September is National Senior Center Month
We celebrate that Senior Centers provide the opportunity to grow, learn, give and connect.
Senior centers do so much for their local communities. Every day, senior centers give aging Americans a place they can gather, find events, and even improve their fitness and health. Many are supported through a mix of federal and state funding, generous donations from fellow members of the community, and the aid of volunteers.
The 2020 theme is: Senior Centers: Delivering Vital Connections
This year’s theme was chosen to highlight how senior centers deliver vital connections to support older adults aging well.
Preventing social isolation is vital and a core senior center mission. While the delivery methods have changed during the pandemic, centers have succeeded in continuing to provide knowledge, programming, and resources.
During senior center month, showcase your center and its vital role in your community, promote a positive image of aging, and create interest among prospective new participants.
Senior Centers are Invaluable
Today’s older adults are a far cry from the era of your great-grandparents. There is a new generation of older adults looking to redefine retirement and reimagine how we age. Now more than ever, older adults are opting to “age in place”, a term used to describe a person living in their own home independently and safely without losing their quality of life. Senior centers are undoubtedly an invaluable part of that process. They serve as a community hub for older adults, connecting them to indispensable services to maintain and elevate wellbeing through a combination of life engagement and both cognitive and physical stimulation.
